Dashboard warning lights: when to stop and when to book in
Surefix Motoring Centre, Halifax ·
Warning lights work a bit like traffic lights. The colour tells you how urgent it is.
Red: stop when it's safe
A red light means a problem that could damage the engine or make the car unsafe. Pull over when it's safe and call for help.
- Oil pressure (an oil can)
- Engine temperature (a thermometer)
- Brake warning
- Battery or charging (if it comes on while driving)
Orange: book it in soon
An orange or amber light means something needs checking but you can usually carry on carefully. The engine management light is the common one. If the car drives normally, book a diagnostic check.
Flashing engine light
A flashing engine management light usually means a misfire. Ease off, avoid hard acceleration and get it looked at straight away, as carrying on can damage the catalytic converter.
