MOT or service: what's the difference?

Surefix Motoring Centre, Halifax ·

People often mix these up. They do different jobs, and most cars need both every year.

An MOT is a legal test

Once a car is three years old it needs an MOT every year. The test checks the car is safe and meets emissions rules on that day. It doesn't change any oil or parts. Driving without a valid MOT can mean a fine of up to £1,000.

A service is maintenance

A service replaces the things that wear out, like oil and filters, and checks the parts that keep the car running well. It isn't a legal requirement, but skipping it is how small problems become expensive ones.

Do both in one visit

Booking the service and MOT together saves a trip, and anything the service picks up can be fixed before the test. Just mention it when you book.
